We started Tread Lightly as we want to do more to reduce the impact we are having on the planet. There's plenty of evidence that the level of consumption this generation has enjoyed has been at an unsustainable level for the planet. Climate change and the extinction of many species being the true cost of our lifestyles.
It's clear that having less impact on the environment in some cases is easy and in others, much harder, so we want to start with some easy stuff. Some changes are easy and free (indeed in some cases they save you the money). So along with products that will make you, your family and potentially friends 'Tread Lightly', we are also selling behaviour change, and these are free!!
However, we are also pragmatic and live normal lives, so we are far from perfect in terms of our own impact on the planet. We are also learning and looking to discover what's true, for example, we are confused about some solutions that are seen to be 'better' e.g. are bamboo socks really greener than cotton and are electric cars a good idea. What we do know, is we want to do more.
So, we are starting a journey, and we want to build a community who want to come on it with us. Taking small steps, learning together and helping each other make easy changes that benefit the planet.
Together we can Tread Lightly!
I've lived in Marlow since 2001 with my husband, two sons, tortoise and now a new puppy! The impact of Covid has meant I no longer work in an office and furlough gave me time to think about what I really want to be doing, resulting in Tread Lightly!
I'm trying to be better at being more environmentally aware, with what I do and use, but I've not found it easy or accessible. This business is giving me the opportunity to learn more and give a pragmatic approach and experience to improving my footprint on the planet, hopefully taking others with me.
Within every cloud, there is a silver lining. Tread Lightly is just that – with time on our hands we were able to reflect on what we would really like to do, and if we hadn't, maybe this business would never have happened.
Lockdown had other silver linings as well – less traffic meant there was more wildlife about. The reduction in traffic and industry meant our air was cleaner and with time at home many decluttered their homes. Decluttering meant donating to charity shops, recycling some things, and throwing away others and the mantra of reduce, reuse and recycle weighed heavy on me as we filled a skip with stuff we no longer wanted.
I share this as Tread Lightly isn’t a “holier than thou” venture – both Helen and I freely admit that as consumers with families and busy lives – and conflicting information on environmental issues, our choices don’t always put the planet first, but we know deep down that “we must try harder” to be more considerate of the environment that we are part of and Tread Lightly.
We’d like to create a community to be part of the journey we are starting – so if there are products you find that make it easy to make a good choice, or behaviour changes that have worked for you, please share them.
